Like many outdoor enthusiasts, I grew up in a family that fished and hunted. Days after getting married, my husband and I moved to Alaska’s remote Arctic where we carried out a subsistence lifestyle. Here were lived on caribou, Dall sheep and moose and I learned to cook tougher to tame game like eiders, grizzly bear and some of the indigenous fares such as whale and seal.
Little did I know it, but my years spent living in Alaska would later open many opportunities. Traveling the world in search of game, fish, special recipes and unique cooking methods, along with15 years of teaching experience and a masters degree, ultimately changed my life.
Today I’m fortunate to write monthly game and fish recipes in several magazines across the nation. My latest project, Cooking Seafood, is due to release Spring 2014.
When I’m not writing and editing, I’m speaking. Annually I give over 50 cooking seminars a year, something I love and look forward to at every opportunity, for although I am the teacher, I almost always come away from a class learning a thing or two from my audience.
TV is another venue in which I get to share my recipes and lifestyle. Most recently I’ve made cooking appearances on the popular TV show, Trijicon’s The Hunt, which is soon to be airing in more than 25 countries around the world. In addition to being a Cabela’s Ambassador Pro Staff member, I’m also involved in their new online series, Cook With Cabela’s. I’m honored to be working with one of the most talented outdoor cooks in America, Scott Leysath, on his awesome new series, The Sporting Chef, which is one of the most authentic cooking series to hit outdoor TV.
My family and I are blessed to be experiencing the outdoors by traveling and living off the land. Our two sons love hunting and fishing, and everything we take, we skin, butcher and cook, together. That’s what I love about the outdoors. It’s healthy. It’s real. It’s our culture.
